Brakes wear gradually, so it's easy to miss the signs until they're serious. Here are seven signs your brake pads, discs or fluid need attention, and how urgent each one is.
1. Squealing when you brake
Many brake pads have a small metal wear indicator that squeals against the disc when the pad is getting thin. It's designed to warn you, so book a check soon.
2. Grinding or scraping
A harsh grinding noise usually means the pad material is worn away and metal is rubbing on the disc. This damages the discs quickly and reduces braking. Stop driving and get it checked.
3. Vibration through the pedal or steering wheel
Judder when braking, especially from higher speeds, is often caused by warped or unevenly worn discs.
4. A soft or spongy pedal
If the pedal sinks further than usual or feels soft, there may be air or moisture in the brake fluid, a leak or a hydraulic fault. This is a safety issue, so don't delay.
5. The car pulls to one side
Uneven braking can mean a sticking calliper, a collapsed hose or unevenly worn pads.
6. A brake warning light
With the handbrake fully off, a brake warning light can mean low fluid or a system fault. Read our warning lights guide for more.
7. Longer stopping distances
If the car takes noticeably longer to stop, or you need to press harder than before, your brakes need checking.
